Rebekah Vardy has been dubbed 'the most brazen Wag of all'. She is tougher than Cheryl was when married to Ashley Cole, more Marmite than Victoria Beckham and given to voicing the sort of opinions via her Twitter page that would make the carefully coached Coleen Rooney quiver in her Louboutins.

In the past year, the colourful, controversial wife of Leicester City star and people's player Jamie Vardy whose astonishing ascent from Sheffield factory worker to Premier League and England player is being turned into a Hollywood film has won as many column inches as Leicester City's 30 million hero himself.

From Leicester's Premiership victory party, where hundreds of fans filled the street outside their home, to their wedding at Peckforton Castle, which bristled with stars including One Direction's Louis Tomlinson (rumoured to be playing Jamie in the forthcoming film) and the rapper Tinchy Stryder; from her Twitter outburst when she was caught up with England fans who were tear gassed at the UEFA Euros ('it was disgraceful,' she says. 'The British fans were treated appallingly from what I saw with my own eyes and I'm not afraid to say so'), to the rumours of a battle between her and Coleen over their VIP seats ('total nonsense we text each other and laugh about stories like that'), the Vardy story is a nonstop rollercoaster, documented at every moment by paparazzi, fan cam or Instagram cartier love bracelet box.

Rebekah with her husband Jamie

But as plaudits rain down on Jamie (one of the Premier League's highest scoring players, he was named player of the season in May and has been one of the few to escape national wrath over England's humiliating Iceland defeat), slings and arrows have been aimed at his wife from every corner.

She has been damned for having three children by three fathers when she met Jamie more than two years ago she already had a daughter, Megan, now 11, and a son, Taylor, now six, and within months was pregnant with their daughter, 20 month old Sofia and blamed for causing a rift between Jamie and his mother Lisa and stepfather Phil, who did not attend their wedding. (Jamie's former girlfriend Emma Daggett kept Ella, their five year old daughter, away from the big day. And while Rebekah's sister Esther, 31, and Madeira born father Carlos were guests of honour, her mother Alison Nicholson was not present.)

A previous marriage, when she was 19, lasted just six months and, to top it all off, she is 34 to Jamie's 29. 'There's a lot in my life that's very far from perfect,' she says. 'I've made mistakes. But I've learnt from them and they've made me the person I am.'

It would be disingenuous to say that as soon as you meet Rebekah (Becky to those close to her) every preconception is immediately dispelled. The walls of their palatial Melton Mowbray home are every shade of interior design grey and there is a spiral staircase, silver and diamant framed mirrors and photographs and brand spanking new furniture in the spacious open plan kitchen.

Jamie, who is at home recuperating from surgery on his arm, says hello, then flits in and out of the room like a hyperactive schoolboy. Rebekah is cooler, more wary. The first thing she says as she sits down is: 'People say loads of nasty stuff about me but I don't care about any of it. It doesn't bother me at all.' It turns out she's not really telling the truth (although she will never admit it), but it also turns out that the truth hasn't really been told about her.

Unusually, she starts to relax when asked the sort of questions most women in her position avoid. Has she had Botox? 'Loads,' she says. 'And I've had a boob job, too. I can't bear it when women lie about this stuff. I go in the sun and I've hardly got any wrinkles. It's not nature, it's Botox.'

Does she think a woman could manage England? 'Absolutely. I think female managers are amazing, it's just a question of finding them. I don't respect that many people, but Karren Brady is absolutely brilliant. She's clever, she's tough and she was bl good at a job that was a hundred times harder because she is a woman.'

When I ask whether she would give Jamie a second chance if he cheated on her, she shoots me a look that would freeze any member of the Iceland defence. Jamie hovers in the background, wiping kitchen surfaces with a cloth. 'Never,' she says. 'When we met we made a pact that the past was the past, because we'd both made stupid mistakes [in Jamie's case, a 2007 conviction for assault], and that this was it for both of us. We understood each other but we wanted to change. I will not stand for bad behaviour. I've been through enough in my life. For me, it's zero tolerance.'

Paint a picture of yourself A jar of Marmite.

She pauses. The expression on her now unsmiling face is meant to read: 'I'm tough', but what she really looks like is defensive and rather hurt. 'People judge me,' she says, 'but they have no idea what my life has been like, why I got married at 19, why my mum didn't come to my wedding, why I got pregnant so young. I don't usually talk about things because I hate people to think I'm trying to get sympathy, so most of the time I ignore everything and just get on.'

Born Rebekah Miranda, the eldest daughter of a BBC local radio DJ mother and a father who worked as a window cleaner (he is now a chauffeur) mens cartier bracelet, she spent her early life moving from one city to another including Norwich, Reading and Oxford as her increasingly mismatched parents tried to find work.

When she was nine, the family lived on a council estate in Witney, near Oxford. Within two years her parents had split up and, Rebekah recalls, 'That was it. It was like my childhood was over. I was this happy kid, but over the next four years everything changed.'

Her mother quickly remarried (the family name changed to Nicholson after Alison wed BBC radio presenter Ian Nicholson) and her daughter rebelled. 'I got into trouble at school for fighting, drinking and behaving badly. I went off the rails. I was unhappy and very confused.'

At 13, the troubled teenager allegedly began to be sexually abused by a family friend. 'I would freeze every single time, terrified. I didn't know what to do. I would just cry in my room later. I bottled it all up,' she said recently. As her behaviour spiralled out of control, she fought continuously with her mother and stepfather. At 15, she took an overdose and then told her mother about the abuse but, according to Rebekah, her mother refused to believe her. 'She said, "Don't be ridiculous, you are lying." I'd been naughty for so long she thought I was talking nonsense cartier love bracelet knock off.' A matter of months later, Rebekah claims, she was asked to leave the family home at 16.

It seems shocking that such a vulnerable teenager was left to fend for herself. 'I couldn't talk to anyone about the things that happened to me,' she says, and admits she didn't tell her husband about the abuse until after they were married. 'I close things down,' she says, 'but I guess I was lucky things weren't worse. I was sleeping on sofas, working in a bar at 16. I never saw myself as a victim I still don't. I was just very troubled and sad and no one cared enough to find out why.'

Her relationship with her father also deteriorated after her parents' divorce. 'I was angry with him because he wasn't there,' she says. 'I went for years without speaking to him. Looking back I was a complete idiot, but I felt totally alone.' By 17 she had dropped out of education altogether. At school she excelled in athletics, winning a trial for the Great Britain javelin team at the age of 14, 'but no one had time to take me to London for it so I gave up. After school I signed up to do law at college. I had this big idea that I could specialise in family law to protect other kids like me, but I had to work to earn money. I was crashing on people's floors, moving all the time. It was too much effort to keep studying. I gave that up, too.'

At 19 she married electrician Mark Godden: it lasted six months. She looks down as she speaks. 'I just wanted someone to look after me. I knew it wasn't love.' In the decade prior to meeting Jamie (they met when she worked in promotions at a Sheffield nightclub and was asked to plan his 27th birthday party), Rebekah bounced from one ill advised relationship to the next, often with violent men.

When she found herself pregnant with Megan at the age of 22, she was advised by everyone to have an abortion. 'I couldn't ever do that. I had no money and I wasn't going to stay with her dad, but I wanted my baby. I knew the one thing I could do was be a good mother. I had my sister and a few friends. I had to have my child.'
